Diamond Colour

GIA's grading standards begin with D (colourless) and go to Z (light yellow). The value of a diamond decreases as the scale moves from D to Z. Grades of D to H are preferred for fine jewellery.

Diamonds are graded by colour, starting at D and continuing through the alphabet. Truly colourless stones, graded D, treasured for their rarity and value, are of the highest quality .

While many diamonds appear colourless, they may actually have subtle yellow or brown tones and these colour grades include P and Q. Although still beautiful, they will be less rare and therefore less valuable. To appreciate the simple beauty of each individual stone, you should compare diamonds side by side with a jeweller. "Fancy" diamonds -- in well defined colours that include red, pink, blue, green and canary yellow -- are highly prized and particularly rare.
